With so many possible side hustles available in today’s gig economy, how do you decide which to choose?

Today, I want to make the case that driving with for a rideshare company is a plausible choice for several reasons. But there are also some major distractions that you should be aware of before signing up.

My name is Josh Overmyer. I’ve completed over 2900 rides as an Uber/UberEats driver-partner since 2014. I know what you’re thinking: “That’s a lot of rides!” It is. And I’ve learned a lot in that time.

Here are my biggest takeaways from four years as a rideshare driver.

The Pros of Becoming a Rideshare Driver

Here’s the good news. You likely already have the knowledge and equipment necessary to be a rideshare driver!

You probably already know where the popular hang-outs are located, how to get around on your city’s streets, and maybe even alternate routes when roads are backed up.

The particulars of the vehicle will change depending on which service you’re signing up to drive for. But for passenger trips, you usually need a four-door vehicle, while food/parcel delivery may be possible with a two- or three-door car. (Drivers are subject to a criminal background check and a driving record check.)

As with any independent contractor gig, the amount and timing of the hours you drive are completely up to you, within regulations.

  • Some people will be comfortable driving the late-night crowd, which can be lucrative for rideshare drivers because of increased demand when passengers may have been out drinking.
  • Other drivers may stick to daytime hours and handle a more business-like crowd of people heading to/from jobs, doctor appointments, church, the grocery or the airport. Since your pay will generally be influenced by the number of trips you complete, when you need to make more money, you’ll probably want to drive more hours.

Some of the networks now allow the driver to set a destination and get trip requests heading in the same general direction. This helps you to maximize both your time and mileage driven for the maximum possible gain, since you’d be driving those miles with or without a rideshare app running on your phone, such as your daily commute or when you are running errands.

Speaking of maximizing time and costs, driving rideshare could allow you to turn certain everyday life expenses into qualified business expenses.

As I mentioned above, you’ll need a smartphone with a data plan, which you probably already have. Now it could be a deductible business expense! Miles driven or other driving expenses could be deductible as well, but you’ll need to keep meticulous records.

The Cons of Becoming a Rideshare Driver

There are some downsides to becoming a rideshare driver.

  • Simply driving with a rideshare company means extra wear and tear on your vehicle. Every additional mile you drive is one less mile that your car will last over the long-term.
  • Extra driving means more fuel costs, more wear and tear of consumables such as tires & brakes, and you’ll need more frequent oil changes.
  • As a result of all these extra costs and wear on your vehicle, you may face the additional cost of replacing your vehicle sooner than you had previously planned.

A good way to think about rideshare is that you are force-depreciating your current vehicle, which is to say you are extracting value out of your current vehicle to hopefully put money away for your next replacement vehicle.

Here’s another thing to consider: inviting total strangers into your personal vehicle.

Josh Overmyer as Uber driverFrom my experience, most passengers will be normal, everyday people just going about their lives: trips to school or work, to the grocery store, church, or to the airport (or beach in my community). But they are still complete strangers, getting into your personal space, and often strangely sitting right behind you, the driver. It can be creepy!

Even worse are the strangers getting into your car who are not on their best behavior. Some are simply loud and obnoxious, and you get used to that from the young twenty-somethings. Some have spent hours at a cigar bar and reek of cigar smoke that permeates your car’s interior and the smell can linger for days.

Worse yet are the drunks who can’t handle their liquor; sometimes you’ll be lucky and they’ll give you enough warning to pull over to the side of the road — but other times they’ll make a mess in your car.

You might have read the last two paragraphs and decided that you don’t want to deal with unruly passengers but would still like to run a side business doing food or parcel delivery.

I’ve delivered some food orders with Uber Eats, but I ended up with very smelly foods that would stink up my car just before a typical passenger Uber trip, and I had orders that included ice cream or milkshakes that weren’t sealed properly by the restaurant, resulting in a sticky mess.

I had a trip that took me upwards of 40 minutes to complete from the time of food pickup to delivery because the restaurant didn’t have the food ready and the recipient’s phone was dead, and for my troubles I made $6…before costs.

Also remember that you’re purposely placing yourself in traffic, which we all hate.

Not only do you sit there idling, wasting time and fuel, but it drives up your blood pressure and stress. You’re also more likely to get involved in a fender-bender when there are more vehicles on the road, and when you are rushing to a pickup or trying to find a convenient parking spot near the food establishment, so you don’t waste too much time circling the block.

Even when you aren’t in bumper-to-bumper traffic, you may experience eye strain from constantly searching for obscure addresses or watching for pedestrians in congested areas such as downtown, at concert venue, or in entertainment districts. Combined with low-light situations, this makes you more likely to end up in an accident.

The Bottom Line

That’s a long list of pros and cons. After all of that — and after four years of driving rideshare — what’s my overall impression of this side hustle?

Rideshare is a pretty easy gig to get started in — but it won’t make you rich, despite what the radio and TV commercials were telling us all a few years ago. After all operational costs are considered, almost anything else you could think of trying would pay more!

That said, rideshare driving could be a good fit for someone in a temporary cash crunch and who isn’t worried about the longer-term impacts to their transportation budget.

Before You Sell Your Website

Obviously you can benefit, both personally and financially, from the sale of your business but before you jump into the process of selling your site, it is important to slow down and consider a few things first.

Why are you selling?

Before you begin the preparations necessary to sell your site, you should consider why you are doing it?

If you have lost genuine interest, have found another business opportunity you would like to explore, or are facing a personal emergency that requires you to step away, your reasons are solid.

But, if you are planning to sell as a knee jerk response to a few bad months, you might want to reconsider for two reasons:

One: All businesses have ups and downs that can be caused by any number of things.

Maybe there has been a Google update or a shift in the marketplace that requires an equal shift in your marketing strategy. Maybe you are experiencing seasonality. The emotional response to cut and run is quite understandable, but it is not necessarily an appropriate response – and not a good way to realise the best value for your website!

If there is a long term dip in your profits, you might consider selling but if you have only experienced short term losses or a weak quarter, stick things out a little while longer to make sure the changes are not just an anomaly.

Two: Before you sell your site, no matter your reasons for doing so, you need to get things in order.

To make your site as attractive as possible to potential buyers, try to make it as profitable as possible. If you have been on shaky ground for a while, try to solidify things before you sell.

A business that demonstrates a clear path to growth, or potential for success, will fetch a higher price than one that has been in steady decline for months or years.

If you are going to sell, you will obviously want to get the best price possible. Optimize your traffic and make it easy for the potential new owners to see themselves turning a profit.

And while it will not be possible in every scenario, in most cases, you will want to ensure that you get a return on your investment. Sometimes you can recoup amounts that are well beyond your investments, other times, you will only see a partial return on those funds.

Either way, it is worth taking a step back and looking at the big picture. Is this the best time to sell? Is the current expected sales price as high as it might be?

Consider things like seasonality.

Some products and services have peak sales seasons and if you can position the sale around one of these seasons, you give the buyer a clear path to a quick return on their investment which will make them a more enthusiastic and motivated buyer.

Anything you can do to improve your site before you try to sell it is worth doing. Yes, this may mean extra effort, but it can also mean extra profit at the time of sale.

The first thing you need to do is see is determine the top performing pages of the website. Ahrefs provides you a list of your top performing pages, as well as keywords that are ranking for those pages.

This is where critical thinking comes into play. Most of the keywords that appear there might not be relevant to the website, so you need to cherry pick the ones that are relevant and have a high search volume. Add these to your bucket of keywords, then highlight the ones that you want to rank for the most.

The next thing you want to do is build your keyword list. That’s where Google Keyword Planner and KW Finder becomes handy tools. The process is the same as how you choose your initial keyword list—go to Google Keyword Planner and plug in your keyword to see other keyword suggestions that you can add to your list.

2. Headlines

One of the struggles in ranking a website is writing a compelling headline – one that has the right keywords and resonates with visitors.

Eight out of 10 people will read a headline, but only two will actually proceed past the headline .

How do you compromise a read-worthy headline and a rank-building headline?

You can go about writing highly-effective headlines in a few ways:

3. Page Content

Websites that rank are those that provide high-quality, relevant content to search users. When we say high-quality content, it should:

  • Be unique – no duplicate anywhere on the site
  • Align with the search intent of the user and provides them with the information they’re looking for
  • Doesn’t have grammatical or spelling mistakes
  • Includes relevant keywords in the title, headers, and body
  • Be accurate and with links to high-authority websites
  • Prompts users to complete a specific action and directs them to the next steps in their customer journey

That’s always going to be a debate among SEO professionals. Some will say that short is better, as users don’t have the time to scroll a wall of text. Long-form content, on the other hand, provides you with more opportunities to insert target keywords. Ideally, you want a page to have at least 1,000 words of high-quality content.

4. Post Slug

A post slug is the part of the URL that comes after the domain name and shows a particular section of the site. This is one of the things that users see when they do a search.

Now, compare these two post slugs:

Which of the two do you think is likely going to get more visits?

If you guessed the second one, you’re on the right track!

It’s easy to optimize post slugs, but this is often overlooked by website owners. What they end up with is a jumble of words – or sometimes, numbers and symbols – that don’t make sense and are hard to remember.

Here are a few pointers when optimizing a post slug:

  • Set the right permalink structure : The permalink is the full URL of any page or post of a website. It includes the domain name and the specific page. The permalink structure should match the goals of the site.
  • Keep it short and easy to read : You want a post slug that’s easy to read and remember, but it should still describe what the post is about. Remove stop words and unnecessary articles, such as “the”, “and”, “a”, and “an” as much as possible.
  • Use target keywords : Post slugs that contain target keywords are more likely to rank on search results and bring more qualified traffic to the page.
  • Don’t use the same slug for different pages : The slug should be unique to the page that you want to rank.

IMPORTANT: Think before publishing any page or post because changing it later is not a good practice and will require you to do a redirect. Moreover, the site might lose SEO momentum if you change or remove the permalink of the target page.

5. SEO Image Optimization

Google doesn’t have the ability to understand what the image is and how it relates to the page, but you can do this by adding alternate text or “ alt” text to images. The alt text provides a short description that appears on the image’s code, so search bots can “see” and “understand” what is being shown.

Another attribute that you have to optimize is the image title. The image title doesn’t appear when the image doesn’t load or appear; it appears when a user hovers over the image.

One way to determine if the site has missing alt text is through a tool called Screaming Frog. This can do a quick crawl of the site and generate a file that shows a list of all images on the site. This makes it easier to check which image doesn’t have an alt text and which needs improving.

Pro-tip : When uploading images, rename the image files with relevant keywords or key phrases that you’re targeting.

Apart from using proper image title attributes and alt text, it’s also important to use images that don’t have a heavy file size. Heavy images will make the website load slower and cause users to bounce from the site. Before uploading, compress the image to reduce its file size.

6. SEO Internal Linking

Websites need internal links to help users navigate from one page to another, shows information hierarchy across the site, and, most importantly, spread link equity across the pages. A common oversight that some SEO specialists make is linking haphazardly.

Internal linking is easy as long as you have your keyword research. Your keyword research serves as a guide on which pages you can link to using the appropriate anchor text for a certain keyword. For example, if you want to rank for a certain keyword, make sure it’s getting as much link juice as possible from relevant pages or blogs on the website. From this, you can create an internal link map for the website.

7. External linking

Adding external links provides your visitors with another point of reference when they need to verify information on your website. There are two ways to go about external linking: one is having another domain point a link to your website (inbound) , and the other is to link from your website to another domain (outbound).

Dofollow or No-follow?

When do you link with a dofollow or no-follow?

You opt for a dofollow link if you want search engines to drive link juice to your website from an external source with a high domain authority. No-follow, on the other hand, is you telling search engines not to follow a website linking to you, or basically putting up a sign that says, “Don’t count this link.”

8. SEO and Broken links

Broken links happen if a page has been removed or its URL has been changed without a redirect added. When someone clicks on a broken link, a 404 page will appear to show the page they’re looking for is not available on the website.

Why are broken links bad? For one, these disrupt the user experience and cause the site’s bounce rate to skyrocket. Users who can’t find the information they need tend to leave the website. Another reason is too many broken links can hurt SEO rankings, as search engines may devalue a website that has broken links.

You’ll also receive a notification on your Search Console dashboard if there’s an increase of 404s on the website.

How to Fix Broken Links

  • Make sure the URL is formatted correctly.
  • Add a redirect to old, broken links and direct them to relevant pages on the site.
  • Remove the anchor text directing to a broken link if the page no longer exists.

9. Sitemap

Search bots read the XML sitemap to get information about a website. The sitemap is like the blueprint of the website—it includes information on the architecture of the site, valuable metadata of the pages listed in the sitemap, and specific types of content on the pages of the website.

When you submit an XML sitemap, you’re giving Google the go signal to count the pages included in the sitemap to be of high-quality and worthy of indexing.

For the majority of us using WordPress, there are plenty of tools and plugins online such as Yoast SEO and All-In-One SEO Pack which automatically submit your sitemap from your website to Google when new pages are created. This is considered best practice — submitting an updated sitemap each time you create a new page. [Automating this process is just the icing on the cake.]

It’s still critical to look through Google Search Console to make sure you don’t have crawl errors, or pages that shouldn’t be on your sitemap, being in the habit of reviewing your sitemap at least once a month is good practice.

10. Backlinks

Yes, link building is not dead. In fact, a website can’t thrive without links supporting it. Like what I mentioned before, links serve as a point of reference – not just for users, but also for search engines. This is why you need to get high quality backlinks from high authority sites.

Guest posting to other websites is one way to get backlinks to your site. Be sure to submit guest posts to sites with a high domain authority. I use Buzzstream to look for potential guest posting websites with high DA scores.

Another effective strategy to build backlinks is creating local citations or listings. I recommend this for websites that are targeting a specific location. If there’s a piece of content you want to promote, social bookmarking and forums are effective channels to utilize that content for building links.

11. Meta Data

Meta Data is composed of two parts – title and description. Some SEO professionals add Meta keywords in their Meta Data, but Google says it doesn’t consider these in ranking search results.

A website’s Meta Data should entice users to click and provide them with information about the page. The Meta Data appears as a snippet of text on search results and on the HTML code of the website.

See how the Meta title and description are written for the results on the top positions. These show snippets that match the intent of the user and provide enough information on what the page is about.

Here are a few best practices to follow when optimizing the Meta Data of a website:

  • Use your target keywords in your Meta Data—ideally, the keywords should be on the left-most side.
  • Don’t write descriptions and titles that are too long, as this will cause the Meta Data to appear truncated.
  • Each title and description should be unique to the page.
  • Write compelling copies for the title and description to maximize click-through. The title and description should provide information that matches the search queries of users.

12. Tags

Optimizing tags is one way of improving how a website communicates with search engines. These tags are not visible to users, but they are to search engines. When search engines crawl a site and find these tags, they get information on what the website is about.

Here are some important tags you need to optimize:

Title tag : Each page should have a unique title tag, with only 50-60 characters (keywords included). What you put in the title tag is what will appear on search results. While it’s important to put in keywords, it’s better to make the title tag appear natural.

Header tags : Depending on how you structure your page, you can have H1, H2, H3, H4 tags, and so on. The idea about using header tags is to organize the content of the page. H1 tags usually serve as the title of the body content, while the subsequent header tags are the subheadings. Use your main keywords on H1 tag and embellish the subsequent tags with secondary keywords.

Schema tags : Optimizing the site’s schema tags improves a search engine’s ability to understand what the website is about and improves how the website is displayed on search results.

Nofollow link tags : Nofollow tags are important if you have backlinks that you don’t want search engines to count. Use this tag if you have links going to websites with a low domain authority.

Anchor text tags : When linking, pay attention to the anchor text. Your anchor text should provide context to where you’re linking; otherwise, search engines won’t see the connection and relevance of the link.

Canonical tags : These are used if the website has duplicate pages. You add this tag to help search engines identify which URL to consider as the master page among the duplicates.

Do a deep dive of the website to ensure its tags are optimized appropriately. Use Yoast for an way of adding tags on the website.

13. Page Speed

Here’s the deal with search—the longer it takes for a website to load, the more likely users will abandon the site. According to John Mueller in 2016, the ideal page speed is below three seconds, to cater to both search engines and user experience.

So, how do you improve a website’s page speed?

First things first, do a quick sweep of the website. Are there too many images on the site? Does it use Flash content? Which plugins are available?

Let’s start with images. Experts say images make up more than half of a website’s weight. For better optimization, use images in JPEG or PNG format. Make it also a habit to compress images before uploading.

Minification of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS is also an important practice to reduce the client-server requests in loading website content. You have to be careful during the minification process, so only the unnecessary codes are removed.

Reduce the number of plugins on the website. If the plugin requires complex operations, requires the use of external APIs, and loads many content assets or scripts, consider removing this from the site.

14. Mobile Optimization

With Google’s mobile-first indexing, neglecting mobile optimization is out of the question. If the site is already mobile optimized, good job! If not, you’ll have to start working on keeping it on par with sites that are mobile optimized.

Here are a few tips to optimize the site for mobile:

  • Minimize intrusive ads that hinder the experience of mobile users. If you want to have ads, it’s best to keep them at the bottom of the page.
  • Make sure pop-up software is Mobile Friendly.  No Flash.
  • Code instead of using images, as this helps in improving page speed.
  • Your content should be direct to the point but catchy and memorable.
  • The site should be responsive to all types of screens and orientations.
  • Text should be clear and legible—you don’t want users to zoom in on the page when they’re browsing.

15. HTTPS

Users are becoming savvier with how they browse and share information. With privacy becoming a main concern of many online users, maintaining a secure site is key.It’s important to check if the site has a security certification. If there’s none, you have to get this certificate from a certificate authority, which will verify the ownership of the web address.

There are three types of SSL certificates:

  • Domain Validation SSL Certificate : This certificate entails the website has been registered by a person with admin access.
  • Organization Validation SSL Certificate : This certificate validates the ownership of the domain and provides information, such as the website owner’s name, city, state, and country. This is usually used for commercial websites.
  • Extended Validation SSL Certificate : This certificate displays the verified owner of the website on browser address bars. This is ideal for high profile websites that are prone to phishing attacks and handle online financial transactions, such as banks.

Make sure your HTTPS site isn’t blocked from crawlers in your robots.txt files. Avoid using the noindex meta tag to ensure search engines are able to index your pages.

16. Duplicate Content

Duplicate content has always been a thorn on the side of digital marketers and website owners. But why do you need to be mindful of duplicate content? For one, search engines will have trouble distinguishing which version to include or exclude in their indexing. This, in turn, makes it difficult to determine which version to rank on search results. Second, duplicate content confuses users, which hinders their search experience. Most importantly, link equity becomes diluted among all duplicates, which impact the visibility of the original version.

How to Fix Duplicate Content:

  • Set up a 301 redirect.
  • Use the rel=”canonical” tag to specify which URL serves as a copy of the original.
  • Don’t use the same content over and over across your pages – even in your Meta Data.
  • If you have pages with similar content, expand the content of each page, or consolidate the information into one page.

17. Pagination

The more structure a website, the easier it is for users to navigate and get the information they need. If done right, pagination can bring about an amazing experience for users. This is why most websites implement pagination to provide users with additional navigation when browsing single sections of a page with long-form content.

When doing pagination, one of the important elements is a visible navigation. Placement is key when it comes to this aspect—do you only add pagination at top or the bottom of the page? If the pages are long and require continuous scrolling, it’s best to add pagination at the top and bottom.

As the purpose of pagination is to make it easier for users to navigate the site, it needs to show where they are and where they can go next. Users should easily identify the current page, so they know of where they are on the site. This also includes adding the Previous and Next links separated from the page numbers.

Another good practice for pagination is adding a “Go to Page” option. This enables users to jump to their desired page number instead of clicking on the Next link or the preceding or succeeding page numbers.

Finally, the first and last page numbers should be visible…

This gives users an idea of how much information they can get from the site. This also allows them to jump to the first and last pages without clicking through the other pages.

18. SEO and Reducing Bounce Rate

A website with a bounce rate going through the roof is never good news. A high bounce rate can be a source of why a site isn’t ranking on search results. When the number of users bouncing from the site is high, Google discredits the website and delegates a low score that affects rankings.

So, how do you reduce a website’s bounce rate?

  • Increased page speed : Use Google’s Test My Site to do a quick mobile speed test and see which areas on the site need improving.
  • Improved readability : This means no walls of text and better content formatting. Use subheadings or bullet points to make content scannable and digestible. Add imagery and screenshots that support information on the page.
  • Compelling Call to Action : Be clear on what you want users to do on the site – whether to buy, subscribe, or contact the business. Entice users to click on the CTA by giving a sense of urgency or showing the value of the service.
  • Fresh content : Always provide fresh content on the website. By publishing high-quality, high-value content, you’re providing momentum for the website and keeping users updated with new information.Understanding what is an ideal bounce rate is the first step into identifying how to reduce users leaving your site, and keeping visitors on your site, engaged and ready to take action.

19. Language Appropriation

English may be the universal language, but it’s not as universal as you think. There’s a difference between the American and British English in terms of spelling, word usage, and expressions.Why is it important to focus on language appropriation in SEO? Simple—you want users to be able to relate to the website. Using the appropriate language is the first step.One of the tools I recommend using is Grammarly. This checks for grammatical and spelling errors, proper punctuation, word choice, and style when writing. Grammarly also allows you to choose your language preference – American English, British English, Canadian English, and Australian English.

20. HTML5 Sections

I’ve discussed a couple of HTML tags that you need to optimize at tip #12 of this post. On this section, I’m going to dive deeper into HTML5 sections that you need to pay attention to. The latest version of HTML has semantic elements that you can optimize to provide search engines more context on what a page is about.

I’ll be focusing on the following:

  • <article> : This tag is used to specify new blog entries in a page. You can use this for content that changes from time to time, such as blog posts, forum posts, comments, or news stories. With this tag, you’re signalling to search engines to focus on the text inside the article more than the other elements of the site.
  • <aside> : This tag focuses on secondary content of the page. This tells search engine that the content with this tag is important, but not as much as the other content on the page. For instance, when you use this tag inside the <article> tag, search engines will see it and note its relevance to the article, but will not focus much on it. When using this tag, the aside content should have contextual relevance to the surrounding content. <nav> : This tag tells search engines that all the links enclosed in the tag are important for moving around on the website, which is why you should use this for major navigation links.
  • <section> : This tag allows you to break down content into different sections to make it easier for users to scan and find the information they need. Each section tag should contain a header tag to help search engines identify what that specific section is about and understand how it relates to the other content on the page.
  • <footer> : This tag specifies content that is placed at the bottom or footer section of a website. It contains copyright information, contact information, authorship information, sitemap, and links to other related pages. It also tells search engines the content enclosed in the tag is not as important as the content on the top section of the page.

By using the appropriate HTML5 sections, you’re hitting two birds with one stone—that is, making it easier for search engines to sort through the content of the website and providing users with a smooth user experience.

21. Displaying Updated Content

Fresh content is one of the foundations of Increasing Search Engine Rankings, but what about existing content on the site?

Do you leave those out of your strategy?

The answer is no.

While it’s important to provide as many pieces of fresh, relevant content as possible, you can still fuel existing content on the site to improve rankings. One way is by updating the cornerstone pieces and those that generate a lot of traffic. This shows the site has new information to offer and that you’re maintaining the website regularly.

There are different ways to display updated content on the website.

Option 1: Displaying the Last Modified/Updated Date Before the Post Content

This is done via functions.php (which is found via Appearance | Editor in your WP Dashboard)

The best time of year to buy a car in 2019

Last week, I gave you the exact systems to help you negotiate lower car insurance rates. Now, I want to talk about another aspect of buying a car that many don’t consider: the best time of year to buy a car.

So what is the best time of year to buy a car? The answer is surprisingly simple as long as you understand car salespeople.

The best time of year to buy a car (aka the number one thing salespeople don’t want to tell you)

For starters, the absolute best month is December.

To understand why December is the absolute best time to buy a car, you need to first understand the process and mentality of the humble car salesmen.

Like any other salespeople, they have quotas. A LOT of quotas. They often come in the shape of monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals for the number of cars they have to hit.

This means that your car purchase could determine the difference between their dealership hitting their sales goal and the salesperson receiving a nice annual bonus or…well, not doing those things.

That’s why December (more specifically, the last week of the month) is the best time of year to buy a car. To take it a step further, you should see if you can negotiate a car deal on December 31st, New Year’s Eve.

According to TrueCar, you can actually end up saving up to 8.3% off the price of a new car if you visit the dealership on New Year’s Eve instead of any other day. This is because this is the last day a dealer has in order to make both their quarterly AND yearly goals. As such, they have a fat bonus on the line so they want to get the cars out the door as soon as possible.

Let’s say you were looking at a nice used car going for about $20,000. If you went in on New Year’s Eve, you stand to slash $1,660 just because you went in on that day alone. Imagine what you could earn if you compounded it with great negotiation tactics.

What if I can’t wait for December to buy a car?

Sometimes, you just need the car sooner rather than later. If this is the case, you can still get a great deal by buying on the last day of another quota.

The next best thing to the end of the year is the end of the quarter. For those of you who don’t think in financial quarters, this basically means:

  • March 31st (last day of Q1)
  • June 30th (last day of Q2)
  • September 30th (last day of Q3)
  • And of course, December 31st (last day of the year, and Q4)

You’ll get a good deal anytime during the last week of a quarter, but it’s best if you can go on the exact last day.

If that’s still too long to wait, then the next best thing is to go on the last day of the month.

According to Mike Rabkin, owner and founder of From Car to Finish, the end of the month is great due to the aforementioned quotas that car salespeople have to hit.

“When a vehicle needs help selling, the end of the month is a good time to buy if negotiating the vehicle yourself,” he says. “Because sales managers at dealerships have a monthly quota to hit and get compensated on whether they hit it or not.”

If you can’t wait until the end of the month … then you need to take a hard look at your life! Going on the last day of any given week isn’t going to be much more beneficial than normal, if at all. In fact, Sunday is one of the worst days for savings (more on the best day of the week below).

My local dealership is having a Labor Day/Memorial Day/4th of July/Hanukkah blowout sale. Is this a scam?

While those huge blowout sale days might seem more like slick advertising than anything else, they actually offer solid savings if you choose to buy then.

According to Autotrader.com, many car companies offer cash-back deals and good financing for holiday weekends — which allows the dealers to take advantage and try to lure you in to buy a car with sales.

So instead of heading to your buddy’s BBQ for Labor Day weekend, you might want to make a trip down to the car dealer to see what sweet deals you can snag. Then, of course, go to the BBQ after in your new ride.

The best day of the week to buy a car

If you want to further optimize your savings on a car purchase, buy your car on a Monday.

Most people do their car shopping on the weekend. Not many think about going to a car dealership in the middle of a Monday ready to negotiate.

On average, people save up to .61% more when buying a car on a Monday than Sunday (the worst day of the week to buy a car). This could be chalked up to the fact that EVERYONE goes to buy a car on Sunday.

If the stars align for the last day of the month to fall on a Monday, you can get even more leverage. In 2019, September 30th (the end of Q3) is a Monday!

The dos and don’ts for purchasing a car

If you want to maximize your savings even more, there are a number of things that you should do (and a whole lot you should avoid) when it comes to purchasing a car.

DO buy a good car that’ll last you at least 10 years

Many people — especially you younger folks reading this — are going to want to prioritize the way a car looks over anything else. Instead, you should be focusing on getting a good car that you will be able to drive for a while (preferably around 10 years).

Cars are long-term investments, people!! This isn’t like a pair of shoes where you’re just going to wear them for a year or two before getting a new pair. And like a pair of shoes, a car only gets worse and less valuable over time. Here’s a complicated graph explaining this.

So look for a good reliable car and definitely don’t do what this reader tried doing.

DO investigate recent graduate incentives

A lot of car dealerships and automakers have fantastic programs for first-time car buyers fresh out of college. These incentives often come in the form of great rebates or special financing for new grads with good credit.

Two ways to find these deals:

  1. Google it. This should really be the first step to anything. Do a simple Google search for recent-graduate car incentive program. Actually, I’ll just do it for you.
  2. Ask the dealer. When you’re negotiating with your dealership, be sure to ask them what they offer in the way of new graduate car incentives.

DON’T assume you have to buy a used car

Buying used isn’t the only way to save money on a car. Over the long term, a new car might actually end up saving you money if you:

  1. Pick the right new car
  2. Negotiate a low price
  3. Drive it for a long time

I’d rather you get a new car that’s reliable than purchasing a used car that’ll break down sooner.

DON’T stretch your budget for a car

Set a realistic goal budget for your car and don’t go over it. Other expenses will come up — maybe car related, maybe not. You don’t want to end up struggling because you can’t afford your monthly car payment.

You don’t have to worry about stretching, though, if you have one thing in place: A Conscious Spending Plan.

How I learned to stop feeling hopeless about money

J.D.’s note: Last week’s talk by Vicki Robin was hosted by the School of Financial Freedom, a Portland-based organization I’m friendly with. At that talk, I met Naomi Veak, one of the school’s coaches. She and I have a lot in common (grew up poor in small towns, attended the same college, etc.). I asked if she’d share her story with Get Rich Slowly readers. She agreed.

Have you ever thought how different your life could have been if you’d taken someone’s advice? What if I told you it may not be too late?

I recently rediscovered a letter my mother wrote to me when I was 19, attending a small liberal arts college in another state.

Towards the end of the letter, she told me to save it, so I did — even though reading it left me angry and frustrated, and not a single word sunk in. You see, she was giving me financial advice after another tear-filled plea for money.

“Don’t expect your thinking to change overnight,” she wrote. “Give yourself time to feel the inward peace of mind that will eventually come.”

This “inward peace of mind” took me 25 years to achieve! How did I finally get there? My name is Naomi Veak, and this is my story.

A Poor Girl at a Rich School

I was a poor girl at a rich kid school.

It was a school I couldn’t afford, and I was surrounded by lifestyles I was ashamed that I couldn’t pay for.

This was only the beginning of a long struggle with finances, where the same money scripts — unconscious beliefs about money that drive our behavior — played themselves out again and again. (For more about this idea, see J.D.’s article about how your money blueprint shapes your world.)

I wanted money. I just couldn’t hold onto it.

Shortly after college, I became homeless. One friend after another was put to the test when I crashed on their couch for too long.

A year later, my boyfriend and I were living out of his truck on the cold and rainy Oregon coast. I remember sitting in the cab, crying as I counted our last handful of change. He later wrote about stealing a sandwich to split with me in a short essay he titled “Desperation and a BLT”.

Overwhelmed by credit card debt, I made an appointment at a debt settlement company to help me get things under control…only to continue charging to the same account a couple of months later.

Then my student loan debt doubled when I returned to school for another degree.

I was unhappy and embarrassed, yet I felt powerless. I wasn’t connecting my decisions with the dire situations I found myself in. Hard-working, smart people can do dumb things. It happens all of the time. (J.D. and I find it interesting that we shared the same experience at the same school only a few years apart.)

I strive to excel at just about everything I do. Being a failure at financial management was incongruous with my self-image, but also somehow felt inevitable.

Finding Financial Freedom

I’ve had three adult careers so far:

  • Fine dining restaurant server. All my earnings disappeared on vacations.
  • Middle-school math teacher. I thought if I worked hard enough at my job, somehow I’d magically be taken care of.
  • A position at an education technology company. This came with a bigger salary — but I matched it with bigger spending.

Each of these jobs left me with the same net result, and the same underlying feelings of insecurity and inferiority from my internalized money scripts — the ones that kept me living ”money in/money out” no matter how much came in. I didn’t know another way to do it.

Then I took the Financial Freedom course from the School of Financial Freedom. It changed my life.

As I worked through the self-paced assignments along with a cohort of learners, I felt like the fog was lifting from my brain. Many nights I could hardly wait to get dinner dishes cleared so I could work on the class.

Since taking the Financial Freedom course, I’ve completely changed my spending habits. But it feels like I have more, not less.

  • Within weeks, we’d built an emergency fund and paid off my husband’s student loan.
  • When I attended yet another financial advisor’s presentation at work, I finally understood what she was saying!
  • And after all those years of shame, I have enough self-compassion to share my financial history with you.

Why couldn’t I have just read a book or learned some of this on my own? Some people can, of course. But I needed something different. I needed a class. I needed the structure, the accountability, the social aspect of learning, and I needed to start working from the inside-out.

Since taking Financial Freedom 1, I’ve also completed Financial Freedom 2, which covers more advanced topics. I’ve also started working to boost my financial literacy in my spare time. Because of that one course, I want to read and take in all sorts of information about money.

Mother Knows Best

What was my mother trying to tell me all those years ago?

Not long after taking the Financial Freedom course, I rediscovered my mother’s letter in a box of photos. I read her words in disbelief. This is what she was trying to tell me when I was in college?

It all makes so much more sense to me now.

  • “Naomi, don’t let yourself lose ground financially. Work with the system. It’s not going to change just because you want it to.”
  • “The sooner you learn that happiness is not derived from material possessions, but other values, the happier you will be.”
  • “How often do you think about all you have to be grateful for?”
  • “Learning a new value system may be one of the most valuable lessons you learn in your college years.”
  • “Don’t expect your thinking to change overnight. Give yourself time to feel the inward peace of mind that will eventually come…”
  • “Eventually you will adapt and you will be happier for it.”
  • “The happiest people make money work for them.”
  • “Remember money is for a protection.”
  • “Don’t let material possessions control your life.”
  • “You are extremely intelligent and have a determined nature when you think something is important. Use these assets to gain control.”

My mother was right, of course. My money scripts weren’t an excuse to continue a destructive behavior pattern. Now that I understand myself, and have learned an entirely new way of thinking about and behaving with money, I’ve been able to change.

The happiest people make money work for them. We do have to learn to work within the system; it won’t change just because we want it to. Learning a new value system is one of the most valuable lessons I’m learning. It just didn’t happen for me 25 years ago.

And I. Mean. EVERYONE.

Was there someone who screened you on the phone before you got the interview? Get their email.

Was there a panel of interviewers? Get all of their contact info.

Did a receptionist escort you to a waiting area and grab you a glass of water before your interview? Grab her business card too.

I can’t think of a single employer who wouldn’t LOVE it if their receptionist told them about the awesome interviewee who emailed them to thank them for helping them that day. They could also be your future coworker, so it’s an easy way to start building a great relationship.

The little details go a long way when it comes to the follow-up.

Step 2: Craft the perfect follow-up (with scripts)

There are two ways you can approach your follow-up email and the pros and cons of each:

  1. Send the hiring manager a physical card or letter

    Pros: Receiving a physical message is incredibly novel in this day and age — and this could set you apart even more from the rest of the applicants.

    Cons: It’s not as fast as sending an email — and you’re going to want to send the follow-up as soon as possible after the interview. If they are moving fast, your note may arrive too late.
     

  2. Write an email to them

    Pros: It’s quick, easy, and allows you to send to multiple people with one message (pro-tip: write one really great follow-up, then copy and edit it for each person you spoke to).

    Cons: It’s more impersonal and there’s also the chance that your message is lost in their inbox or spam folder. Sending the exact same letter to everyone could backfire.

In the end though, it doesn’t matter which method you choose as long as you do it.

When you do, here’s that first script from earlier that you can use to follow up with the interview manager:

The initial follow-up email (send ASAP):

Hi [NAME],

Thanks for taking the time to chat today. I especially enjoyed talking about [XYZ].

I really think this is a great fit for both of us. Hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

[YOUR NAME]

This example is for an email — but you can easily use it for a physical card too.

Notice three key things about this email:

  1. It’s a short, simple message. Your follow-up message doesn’t need to be fancy or complicated. In fact, making it too long will either bore the hiring manager or make them think you’re desperate.
  2. It’s specific. Be sure to get specific about the details. Bring up something that you actually enjoyed talking about in the interview. These details will trigger the hiring manager’s memory and help make a great, lasting impression.
  3. It should be sent as quickly as possible. Aim to send your email within two hours of your interview. This will show your enthusiasm, and it’ll be easier for you to remember all the details you should include.

Advanced tip: The best people in every field automate as many areas of their lives as possible. You can actually automate your interview follow-up email, if you want to save some time and ensure it gets sent. You can do this by creating a draft of your follow-up email before you even go to the interview. That way after it’s done, you can simply open the draft, fill in the missing details, and hit “send.” Boom. You’re done and can spend more time focusing on the Big Wins in your life.

Step 3: Follow up

Don’t sweat it and be patient. It may take the hiring manager several days or weeks to interview the other applicants and make a decision.

If you have not heard a response after a few days, you can send another follow-up email to check in.

Use this gentle email template to nudge them along:

Hi [NAME],

I just wanted to follow up on the [XYZ] position we chatted about on [DAY OF WEEK]. 

You mentioned getting in touch about potential next steps. Is there anything I can do to help speed this process along?

Thanks,

[YOUR NAME]

Notice how this email is short and gets right to the point. It uses a light touch, but still lets them know you’re interested in the job.

It’s also important that this email doesn’t make the recipient feel guilty for not replying sooner. If you make them feel that way, a follow-up will actually backfire on you and you could lose the opportunity altogether.

The most likely thing is that they’re just busy or your first message got lost in the inbox. This email will grab their attention and bring your interview back to the top of their mind.

After that, wait one more week before sending your next, and final, response.

Advanced tip: Be sure to download a tracking app, such as HubSpot’s email tracking tool, that lets you know exactly when your interviewer opens your follow-up message. The tool notifies you the moment they see your email, so you’ll be able to follow up right then while you’re fresh on their minds. Doing this is key because it’s not disruptive, since they’re already reading your email and saves both you and the interviewer time.

When to call it quits on following up

If you still haven’t heard back a week later, reply to your previous interview follow-up email, saying this:

I hope you’re doing well. I just wanted to float this email to the top of your inbox — in case you missed it.

Thanks,

[YOUR NAME]

If they’re interested, they’ll get back to you. If they still don’t reply, it’s probably safe to assume they’ve chosen someone else for the role.

If that’s the case, don’t beat yourself up. It happens to everyone at some point. Go back to the job search — and prepare even better next time.

This is a series of three emails you send to the person you just met with that’ll almost ensure they’ll want to keep in touch with you.

Here are the emails complete with my breakdown of why they work.

Email #1: Thank you (same day)

Hi Amy,

Just wanted to thank you again for meeting with me earlier. I’m definitely going to get in touch with Susan like you recommended. I’ll keep you in the loop, and of course, please let me know if there’s anything I can do to repay the favor!

A few things to note: First, the thank you is simple. No need to spill more ink than you need to.

It also references a specific action item you’re going to follow up on. This shows the person you’re emailing that you were paying attention during the interview.

The email ends with a solid offer from you to help in any way you can — while asking nothing of the recipient.

Email #2: Add value (1 – 2 weeks later)

Hey Amy,

Saw this article in the Wall Street Journal and it reminded me of what you said about productivity tests! No response needed, just thought you might find it interesting.

Now we start to shake things up. The person you’re emailing likely wasn’t expecting to ever hear back from you again. They especially weren’t expecting you to send something of value to them.

This can be anything — a blog post, email newsletter, YouTube video — as long as you know they will find it interesting.

How do you know this? Because during your meeting, you listened to what they said and noted the things that piqued their interest.

Pay close attention to the phrase used in the last sentence: “No response needed.” This is music to a busy person’s ears. Think about it: I get 600+ emails / day, and do you know what most of them want? They want something from me. When you can say “No response needed,” and send me something I find fascinating, you’re adding value to my life.

Email #3: Close the loop (2 – 3 weeks later)

Hi Amy,

Wanted to give you an update: I did end up talking to Susan, and you were right — Acme is definitely a fit for me. I’m reaching out to a friend there to learn all I can about Acme before I apply. If there’s anyone else you think I should speak to, please let me know.

Thanks again! I’ll let you know how it goes.

Now is when you separate yourself from 99.999% of people by showing the person you’re emailing that you actually took action on what they suggested.

If you give specific names of people and companies, that’ll show you were listening. It’ll also show the person you’re emailing that they were right — which is a major psychological boost for them.

Just like my Briefcase Technique, this system seems simple and obvious — until you use it. Then its true power is revealed.

One more testimonial to the Closing The Loop technique that you taught last night. I reached out to a prior boss I haven’t seen in 4 to 5 years about a position I heard about at that company. All I had asked for was if I could still use him as a reference and his up-to-date contact info. He responded in less than a half hour. By following up and offering to keep him in the loop, he then responded with an offer for a letter of recommendation and an offer to send a personal email to the hiring manager on my behalf. Holy Crap! It really works…

Why sending a follow-up email is a critical step

It doesn’t matter how good your interview was — you STILL need to send a follow-up email for five reasons:

  1. It leaves a good impression. And impressions are everything when it comes to getting a job.
  2. The hiring manager will remember you. You were likely one of several interviews conducted by the company. Don’t get lost in the fray. There’s no better way to keep you on the hiring manager’s brain than by sending a follow-up email.
  3. You show that you have initiative. When you go out of the way to send an after-interview email, it shows that you’re willing to go above and beyond to make a lasting impression.
  4. The company will see that you’re genuinely interested. The follow-up email is a good way to separate you from the other interviewees who most likely didn’t even think to loop back with them.
  5. Interview follow-up emails work. Your chances of getting the job go way up if you send a follow-up email. Especially if you are neck-and-neck with another candidate.

Imagine you’re in the process of hiring and you have two potential candidates. Both are equally qualified for the role and interviewed well — but only ONE of them sent you a follow-up message thanking you for your time and calling back to some points you made that really made an impact on them.

Who do you think you’re going to pick for the job?

Answer: THE PERSON WHO SENT YOU THE FOLLOW-UP MESSAGE!!

It’s important to also keep in mind that your interviewer’s reputation is on the line.

This is key, so I’m going to say it again.

Your interviewer’s reputation is on the line.

Based on the few minutes they interact with you, your interviewer has to make a lot of important assessments. Do you have the right skills? Will you fit with the company culture? Are you reliable and trustworthy? etc.

It’s like speed-dating on steroids — with one major exception. If they judge you incorrectly, they don’t just risk an awkward second date. They risk their boss questioning their judgment for the rest of their career. And if it doesn’t work out, they have wasted months of time and thousands of dollars. They need to get this right. Not just for YOU but for THEM.

It’s important to keep this in mind when you go into an interview.

Your success is in their best interest. And when you follow up correctly after an interview, you make their job easier by proving you’re a Top Performer who deserves the job.

3) Successful Entrepreneurs are hard-wired to see opportunity where others do not.

I consider this the No1 Entrepreneurial Mindset that all great entrepreneurs share.

Successful entrepreneurs are observant – they are sharp-eyed, they notice things regular folks do not.

How Richard Branson was inspired to create an airline is a great example of an entrepreneur spotting an opportunity.

Richard Branson was traveling to Puerto Rico when his flight was canceled, leaving him and hundreds of other passengers stranded. Branson didn’t moan about his situation – he chartered a plane and divided the cost of the plane by the number of seats, and charged the stranded passengers $39 to re-book their seats.

Go for the opportunity – figure out the details later

Another example is Manny Khoshbin – multi-millionaire real-estate investor – who came to the USA from Iran aged 14.

He believes in going for the opportunity and figuring out the details later.

Manny tells how on an early deal he struggled to scrape together a $10,000 deposit to put down on a multi-million-dollar bank-owned abandoned shopping center. The deal was too good to pass up, so he risked the $10,000 – believing he could raise the rest of the financing later. [which he did]

This deal ended up making Manny over 1 million dollars profit…

A Million Dollar profit he would not have made if he had not trusted that he could figure out the details later!

Focus on opportunities, not obstacles.

4) Successful Entrepreneurs Make Decisions Quickly

Entrepreneurs have an increased appetite for risk compared to the general population and nowhere is that more evident than in decision making.

They understand the consequences of getting a decision wrong but just as important, they understand the consequences of making no decision.

A wrong decision can be corrected – but you can’t go back in time and reverse not making a decision!

Remember – In business, a correct decision is wrong when it is taken too late.

Even if they have never heard of it, the most successful entrepreneurs, follow the 40-70 Rule.

Colin Powell, former head of US military forces says that we need between 40 and 70 percent of the total information to make a decision. Less than 40 percent of information and we are likely to make a wrong decision. But if we keep looking for information beyond 70 percent, by the time we make the decision, it will be so late that others will have acted on the opportunity and will have a competitive advantage over you.

Of course there are times when you should not make decisions quickly…

One such time is when you are angry.

Making a decision when you are angry rarely works out.

Or as a mentor of mine succinctly put it:

Don’t make a permanent decision on temporary feelings.

5) Successful Entrepreneurs Trust Their Gut

Richard Branson famously said:

“I never get the accountants in before I start up a business. It’s done on gut feeling, especially if I can see that they are taking the mickey out of the consumer.” 

Intuition is that magic that can get a successful entrepreneur from 40% confidence to 70% confidence in a decision.

Successful entrepreneurs are comfortable with not knowing it all. [ figuring out the details later ]

Wait for certainty and you will only see what everyone else can see and miss on the opportunity to get ahead of the game.

Never apologise for trusting your intuition – your brain can play tricks, your heart can blind, but your gut is always right.

5) Successful Entrepreneurs understand: “Minimal Movement”.

If you have read any of my previous posts you will know that Stuart Wilde was an early influence on my entrepreneurial mindset.

It was Stuart Wilde who introduced me to the discipline of Minimal Movement.

Minimal Movement is a time management strategy where you eliminate all actions that serve no purpose, and you allocate the least possible energy and effort to the tick-tock things you have to do.

Minimal movement is analyzing what is very important to you, slightly important and not important at all, thus focusing on what serves you best.

Minimal Movement is a powerful tool for compounding focus and getting results.

I recently listened to Brent Charleton and Ian Stanley (of LionHeartWorkshop) discuss Time Management and how they structured Things To Do Lists.

They made a distinction that reminded me a lot of the Minimal Movement strategy.

When constructing Things To Do lists they recommend we break down tasks into 3 different priorities:

a) Tasks That Produce Money Now (1 -29 days)

b) Tasks That Produce Money Later (30 – 180 days)

c) Tasks That Produce Maintenance Money. (This is things you do to keep the money flowing from obligations or commitments you have already made such as a Monthly Newsletter or managing a membership site.)

If you focus your day doing tasks that produce maintenance money then you will plateau very quickly – or even go backwards.

Successful entrepreneurs are always adding new strings to their bow…

They are thinking ahead and looking for new ways to grow their business and make money.

They are constantly on the lookout for tasks that will produce money later.

Successful Entrepreneurs start their day with a Revenue Generating task!

6) Successful Entrepreneurs have a Stoic Mindset

Stoicism and being Stoic in the face of adversity is not a new idea – but it is a philosophy and way of thinking that has seen a re-emergence in the last decade.

Stoicism helps us to direct our thoughts and actions in an unpredictable world.

We can’t control external events and people, but we can control our mind and choose our behavior in regards to these external events.

The Stoic Entrepreneur is dedicated to:

  • Making the best use of their time
  • Mastering their emotions
  • Living a virtuous life – they have high moral standards

By these standards most successful entrepreneurs are stoic – even if they do not know it!

Certainly that was the case with me…

In my 20’s – long before I heard the term Stoicism, one of my mentors explained that with every event in life I had a choice.

I could either react to it OR respond to it.

A reaction is usual quick, without much thought, tense and aggressive.

It typically provokes more reactions

A response is usually calm and non-threatening.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.

7) Successful Entrepreneurs are comfortable saying NO!

If you want to get more of the important things done – you need to say NO more often.

Especially to energy sapping acquaintances…

Most of us, especially in friendships, hate to offend.

But the truth is that true friends understand and respect your position and priorities.

Focus only on tasks that get you closer to your goals.

As Craig Ballantyne suggests – create a NOT to do List

We have spoke previously about ‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.’ – but this is not a new idea – the great Stoic teacher Epictetus explained it perfectly.

“Above all, keep a close watch on this—that you are never so tied to your former acquaintances and friends that you are pulled down to their level. If you don’t, you’ll be ruined. . . . You must choose whether to be loved by these friends and remain the same person, or to become a better person at the cost of those friends . . . if you try to have it both ways you will neither make progress nor keep what you once had.”

Still as relevant today as it was in 100AD!

Of course, this does not mean that you don’t make time for the three F’s (Fun, Family and Friendship)

The point is – successful people are experts at scheduling and prioritizing and if you want to join them – focus on their winning habits and mindsets

8) Successful Entrepreneurs are Mentally Flexible

They know that change is constant and part of life.

Things happen, sometimes bad, sometimes good.

Either way successful entrepreneurs deal with them positively.

Successful entrepreneurs – in the light of new information, reserve the right to change their mind – reverse a decision, close a business.

They are not embarrassed to acknowledge when they got things wrong.

Above all – they don’t allow the potential opinion of their critics to influence them or stop them taking action.

As Tony Robbins says “stay committed to your decisions but flexible in your approach”

9) Successful Entrepreneurs are Hard-Working

Talent does matter, but hard work matters even more…

Life is a manifestation of where you direct your energy.

If you are lazy and unfocused – you will get lazy and unfocused results!

Successful entrepreneurs understand that hard work compounds and invest the time and effort necessary to succeed.

It is not unusual to discover that some of the most successful entrepreneurs did not excel in school or college.

What made them different was their work ethic and commitment to seeing a task completed.

There are some who will suggest you don’t need to work hard to be successful – but don’t be deceived.

Sure, you can make money in your sleep, but first you must put the work in!

Optimism is defined as “the belief that good things will happen to you and that negative events are temporary setbacks to be overcome.”

This doesn’t mean you are naive or unaware of the potential difficulties ahead – it just means you approach difficulties and set-backs in a positive manner.

With an optimistic mindset you are inspired to work harder – whilst pessimism hinders you and demotivates you.

Success doesn’t create optimism; It is your optimism that leads to success.

It is said that optimism is the No1 mental habit that helped make Warren Buffett a Billionaire…

Financial advice from my father (when I was nineteen)

Dad at work in his shop“Who was there for your father when he died?” Kim asked me a few moments ago. She’s interested in becoming a death doula, so she’s reading a book about end-of-life care.

“It’s odd you should ask that today,” I said after I told her the story of my father’s six-year battle with cancer.

“Why?” she asked.

“Today is the equivalent day in my life as the day when Dad died in his,” I said. “It’s ten days until I turn fifty. Dad died ten days before his fiftieth birthday. So, it’s a somber day for me. I’ll be thinking of him all day.”

Actually, I’ve been thinking of Dad all week.

It started when I published Naomi Veak’s story about how she learned to stop feeling hopeless about money. In that article, Veak shared a letter her mother sent her when she was nineteen years old. Veak was a poor kid at a rich school, and she was struggling to figure out finances. Her mother offered some words of wisdom.

I had the exact same thing happen to me at the exact same age at the exact same college. I was a poor boy at this rich school. During my sophomore year at Willamette University, when I was nineteen, my father wrote me a letter filled with financial advice.

Today seems like a good day to share it with you folks.

Everything that follows — starting with the title “J.D.’s Points to Ponder” — is from my father except that I’ve added a few notes in order to provide context to some of the things Dad wrote. (If you’re super interested, I’ve uploaded a PDF version of Dad’s letter.)

Here’s my father’s financial advice to me when I was nineteen years old. (This is unedited. All misspellings are his.)

Warning — Make sure you read them all. There may be some surprises in them so read them all or you will miss them.

Letter from Dad

#1 Your scholarship is irreplacable. There is no way that you or I can make up $9500.00 a year difference. Study comes first. Before you panic, read on. I hear you talk about working and unless I missed something somewhere you are talking 32 hours a week at least or was that 24 hours a month on campus?

J.D.’s note: I was fortunate to attend Willamette on a full merit scholarship, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to afford it. During my sophomore year, I really did work 32 hours per week. I worked three (sometimes four) part-time jobs.

#2 You were successful at saving a little over $1000.00 this summer. That’s an achievement for you. We will try to do better next summer won’t we.

Letter from Dad

#3 Nutrition is important. Don’t slight it. It is your body that supports your mind. If you slight your body you slight your mind so eat your green beans.

#4 Wear clean underwear.

#5 You used to play lots of video games. One of them had a rocket and you had an energy level you had to worry about. Energy was used to travel and to shoot at the enemy. Life is a big videogame. In our society money is the energy. There are certain things you have to or should do so make sure don’t shoot so many asteroids just for the fun of it that you deplete your energy level and someone has to flash on your screen —GAME OVER—.

Letter from Dad

#6 Girls can be handy. They are nice to talk to and smooch and some times they take pity on poor helpless males and cook them a meal + iron for them.

J.D.’s note: As I’ve mentioned before, my father was into gold. But he was dumb about it. He bought high and sold low. Here, he’s suggesting he might give me an ounce or two of his gold if I keep a budget.

#8 While we are on the subject let me throw out some ideas that would point to reasons for subconscious compulsive spending.

a. When you were little mom was busy in the business and would buy you a new toy almost everyday. It was a way of saying “I feel so guilty — here, this toy is my love for you.”

Your dad played the same game only it was in large a grand ways — tropical fish instead of gold fish etc.

The result would be a compulsion to spend when lonely. The cure is to “look at them and sigh and know they love you.” You are a big boy now and it is time to say goodby to that part of parenting you never had. Please don’t wait till you’re 40 to do so. I can think of a zillion mistakes we made but I will guartee [sic] you that we did the best we knew how. The answer is for you to identify and acknowledge the mistakes for what they are. Then you will be able to see the love that was there too and compulsion will leave.

b. Don’t forget the Saint Helens tee shirts. I can bet you tap into those feelings a dozen times a day as you walk around campus and compare your situation with that of some of the others. Spending and collecting is a way of trying to prove that you have it too.

J.D.’s note: In 1980, things were especially tight for my parents. Dad was unemployed and there was little money to buy clothes for three growing boys. Before I started sixth grade that fall, Mom shopped the close-out racks. Some of the t-shirts she got me commemorated the Mount St. Helens eruption a few months earlier. I hated those shirts and was embarrassed to wear them, but my parents made me do so.

If this is the case the cure is to focus on the objective — getting through school — and realizing that the “it” that they have is privelege that come with wealthy parents. No matter what you spend you will not create wealthy parents. Focus on the “it” that you have that no amount of money can buy. Looks, brains, nice to be around, kindness, talent to name a few. Just remember, “you never saw a fish wishing he were a frog.”

J.D.’s note: Looking back with 2019 eyes, I find it interesting that my father mentions “privilege” here. Remember, Dad had a love-hate relationship with wealth. He wanted to get rich himself, but he resented the folks who already had money.

#9 Your parents love you! We talk about you everyday. it wouldn’t hurt to call sometimes and invite them down for a minute or two. They might come with bags of groceries in each arm.

#10 I know the time will come when you may go on an adventure such as a move out of state or a trip to Australia or whatever else crosses that mind of yours. We will probably throw out all kinds of cautions. That’s just what parents do but follow your dreams anyhow. Please don’t ever move off without letting us know where you are and dropping a note once in a while just to say your OK. Parents have spent 18 years listening to your every breath and loosing sleep if you missed a breath and they just can’t get out of that habit easily. You can do most anything you want and you will have our approval as long as we know you are OK.

#11 We need to get the title transfered on the car + some repairs made soon. The new guy I hired is also a mechanic so plan a Saturday out here real soon.

#12 If you maintain your apartment address over the summer it may be worth $3500 in grants next fall. You can come stay with us but you need to prove you are living on your own to be considered on your own income.

Looking back, it’s clear that I inherited most of my money blueprint from my mother and father. I picked up the same bad habits they had. But being a poor boy at a rich school led me to develop some new bad habits of my own. Dad could see these bad habits forming and was trying to help me before I got into trouble.

I didn’t heed his advice, obviously, and so ended up deep in debt. How would my life have been different if I’d listened to his words of warning? I don’t know.

Although my relationship with Dad was strained at the end of his life, I admired him a great deal. He had his faults — including poor money skills — but he was a dreamer, and he loved his family.

10 Little-Known Ways to See How Much Traffic a Website Gets

When the average person visits a website for the first time, their eyes follow an F-pattern.

When I visit a website for the first time, I look at something else. In less than a second, I have a decent idea of how much traffic that website gets which helps me decide whether or not to stay.

Knowing how much traffic a website gets helps you validate the website’s content and lets you know how much traffic you need to get to see similar results.

Here are ten little-known techniques for figuring out how much traffic someone else’s website gets.

By the way, SEMRush is my favorite tool.

1. Alexa Ranking

The Alexa Ranking isn’t exactly “little-known,” but it is the best-known metric for ranking websites. This is the first thing I look at when I visit a site:

Alexa tracks stats for everyone who has the Alexa toolbar installed on their browser, which accounts for less than 1% of internet users. So it’s not very accurate, but it’ll give you a rough idea of the website’s popularity.

  1. If you use Chrome, install the Alexa Extension.
  2. If you use Firefox, get the Alexa Add-On.

Alexa’s reliability is shaky – some argue that it’s worthless – so it’s important to consider other metrics.

2. SEMRush.com

My favorite tool for website-based keyword research is SEMRush.com. Here’s a screenshot when you search IncomeDiary.com:

Semrush gives you a lot of information on a websites search engine rankings, how much traffic they get for those rankings, competitors, paid advertising, backlinks and so much more.

As you can see from the screenshot above, IncomeDiary ranks 1st for “how to make money from a website,” 4th for “famous entrepreneurs,” and 11th for “business movies.” Those are highly competitive keywords that are collectively searched over 10,000 times per month.

As you go down the list, you can start to estimate how much traffic he gets for each keyword based on the position and search volume.

3. SimilarWeb.com

SimilarWeb is a website traffic checker that’s similar to Alexa, except, it’s got a lot more detail put into it, so it’s more accurate!

ID SimilarWebThe main takeaway is that it gives you a line graph with values for the number of daily unique visitors and the sources. You can see the countries that your traffic comes from, top referring sites, the top destination sites (sites people visit after yours), display ads, audience interests, and up to 10 organic keywords with the free version.

4. Ahrefs.com

Without a doubt, Ahrefs is one of the best tracking tools I have ever used! This software provides such a wealth of website traffic information. You can find out:

  • New, lost and broken backlinks.
  • Domains sending the most traffic to a site.
  • Search engine rankings.
  • How much traffic a search engine ranking is getting a site.
  • Pages from a site getting the most traffic.
  • You can compare website rankings vs competitors.

And so, so much more…

Not only is Ahrefs great for tracking competitor websites, it’s also a huge help when it comes to figuring out how to improve your own sites!

5. SE Ranking

SE Ranking is somewhat similiar to SemRush and Ahrefs. They give you a great amount of detail about your competitors organic and paid traffic.

They tell you how high your websites and your competitors websites are ranking and how many people are looking at that search term. A great tool, that seems to be growing in popularity.

6. YouTube or Vimeo Views

If a website has a YouTube or Vimeo video embedded on the homepage, click to “Watch on YouTube.”

If the video is public, both YouTube and Vimeo will show the view counts. Also check the upload date to estimate how many people view it per month.

Just because the homepage Dollar Shave Club video has almost 4 million views doesn’t mean that their site had 4 million views. But it gives you some idea of how much traffic they got in their first month.

7. Blog Post Comments

Another way to gauge the popularity of a blog is to look at how many comments it gets per post.

With my sites, I’ve found that an average of 1 out of every 200 readers leaves a comment. So a post with 20 non-Nicholas comments was viewed about 4,000 times. This changes with every post and every blog, but again, it gives you a general idea.

8. Total Comment Counts

Immediately after you comment on a WordPress blog, your browser redirects you to where your comment will show up. If you look at the URL, you’ll see something that looks like this:

The second half of the URL tells you that you left the 108,656th comment on IncomeDiary.com. This number includes spam comments. Assume that 75-90% of the comments are spam and you can get an idea of how many comments a site has had since day one.

9. Search for Interviews

A large percentage of successful website owners do interviews, talking about how they built their site and what works for them. Often, they will share not only how much traffic they get, but also where it’s coming from.

You can see some examples of bloggers talking about how much traffic they get by looking through some of the interviews we have conducted for IncomeDiary.

In my experience, a lot of people are more open about sharing traffic stats then you would think. You see this not just in interviews but if you peruse through the archived articles on a blog, there’s a good chance you’ll stumble upon a “blog in review” or “traffic report” post. With those stats, you can start to figure out how much traffic the site is getting today.

10. Check “Advertise Here” Pages

By far, the most accurate way to figure out how much traffic a website gets is to go to their Advertising page.

If a blog is trying to sell advertising space, they need to tell you exactly how many unique views and impressions your ad is going to get every month.

If you sell advertising space on BuySellAds, you need to share your monthly unique and monthly impressions.

The Final Word

Unless the owner of the website reveals exactly how much traffic they’re getting, every other figure is a best guess. Most tools are surprisingly inaccurate when it comes to generating stats. They are good, however, for comparing yourself against others.
